Filename                : immortal.bsp
Release date            : 7.11.2024
Author                  : ComfyByTheFire / Amelie C. Langlois
Email Address           : contact@amelieclanglois.com
Misc. Author Info : I stream community Quake maps and mapping almost every day at twitch.tv/comfybythefire. I've also written a lot of dark fantasy/scifi/cosmic horror books.
Other Maps to Date : Starslave, Snack Pack 3 (Annihilation Conduit), I No Longer Fear The Ranger Guarding My Heel, Coffee Quake 2 (Transient State, Blood Ascendant, Ferric Injection, The Negative Engine, Sleep Paralysis, The Tangent Universe, Lemon Stealing Vores) You can find them all at https://www.amelieclanglois.com/level-design

Description : You are Ranger, an operator of the UTJR stationed at a secret, multinational research facility in Finland. You are being deployed to investigate the disappearance of a survey team that went missing beyond the slipgate, cast into the farthest reaches of existence. Yet through the thin veil of reality, you find only a desolate plane of flesh and despair, and a dread voice that beckons your name. This custom map for Quake 1 includes a story, extremely challenging fights, trick jumping, and a vast amount of large secret areas, but is difficulty scaled to accommodate everyone. This map is larger than an entire episode, if played in its entirety, and is best experienced in segments. There is also a start map. Please play one difficulty lower than you normally would; hard and nightmare are intended to be impossible for the majority of players. Easy mode (skill 0) is recommended. Runs on the Quoth mod, which is included. Ingame music provided by Atrium Carceri and the artists at Cryo Chamber. Trailer music is Nightmare (Ranger) by Markie Music.

This currently requires the newest version of vkQuake! 1.31.0+. Modern hardware and an SSD is also strongly recommended.

If you prefer it, this will also currently run on the custom compile of Ironwail that is posted on the Slipgate Sightseer page for this map.

I also recommend that you max out your antialiasing settings so that fence textures, like bars and such, display properly at a distance. The sndspeed 44100 console command is also recommended for higher audio quality, though some people may prefer the crunchiness. I also recommend setting your texture mode to classic in the graphics options.

To play this, put the "immortal" folder in your Quake directory, launch the game, open the console with "~", type "game immortal", and then just start a new game to load the start map.

The plasma rifle is bound to 9 by default. If you want to rebind it, the console syntax is: bind "whateverkeyyouwant" "impulse 250"

The flashlight is bound to 0 by default. If you want to rebind it, the console syntax is: bind "whateverkeyyouwant" "impulse 13"

			  Version 1.9

Special thank you to Lilah for all your love and support. Also thank you Kell, Mazu, Smilecythe, Bal, and Fairweather for inspiration, and to the Quake mapping community overall - you guys feel like home, and you sincerely mean a lot to me.

PARTIAL SPOILERS: this map has some secret areas that are the size of a regular map. I recommend taking one of the gold keys to the slipgate generator you find in the second half of the map.

There is also an extensive secret ending. Find all four runes, and then once you reach the final island, go through the sealed door in the center of it. This door will only be unlocked if you've found all the runes. You can also just use the "noclip" console command to pass through it if you want to see everything, but make sure you let yourself fall the entire way so you hit all the triggers. Then, make your way to the slipgate generator, and pass through it. A new area will be accessible to you near the end.

Two of the runes are located in the first "half" of the map, prior to the silver key door. The other two runes are located beyond that point. They're not hidden in secrets, so they won't be hard to find so long as you explore all the paths.

* Play Information *

Single Player           : Designed for
Cooperative 2-4 Player : Yes, but stay close to each other and be careful with teleports. There are a couple unavoidable bugs, like the lights in the start map being solid for non-host players
Deathmatch 2-4 Player : Not compatible
Difficulty Settings : Everything is scaled, including jumps and secrets. It may be a little spicy though.
Monsters		: 5065 easy, 5251 normal, 5455 Hard, 5511 Co-Op Hard
Secrets			: 108

* Construction *

Base                    : New from scratch
Build Time              : 1.5 years+
Brushes			: lol
Editor(s) used : Trenchbroom, ericw-tools, necros gui, Photoshop, TexMex, Krita
Known Bugs : It is possible to bug the rising staircase double secret in the first floor main hall if you're really fast. It will probably just smoosh you though. Not a bug so much as intended, but this probably won't run with source ports that aren't the new VkQuake or compiled Ironwail - it's slightly large. Older hardware will probably stutter in some fights, particularly the final fights.

May Not Run With : Old source ports or old hardware
Tested With : VkQuake, Limit-Raised Ironwail
