* Play Information *

Single Player : Yes

Cooperative 2-4 Player : Yes

Deathmatch : I left the DM entities in, but good luck getting together ~60 players to fill the
                          space :-)

Difficultly settings : Easy (skill 0): 119 monsters
						  Normal (skill 1): 205 monsters
						  Hard (skill 2): 292 monsters

New Sounds : No

New Graphics : One custom transparent texture, which is kind of anachronistic but serves a purpose.

.map Included : Yes

Software needed to play : - Registered version of Quake.
						  - A custom source port with support for increased limits and the BSP2 format;
IronWail is recommended (https://github.com/andrei-drexler/ironwail); the latest
QuakeSpasm seems to load it okay too. Unsurprisingly it breaks most of the
original limits but the standard grid bounds remain intact, so protocol 666 should
							work.
						  - I have not tested the 2021 NightDive remaster. From what I've read though, I
don't know of any reason why that wouldn't support it.

Installation : - Create a folder called 'e1' in your Quake directory, and move pak0.pak there.
						  - Launch Quake and type 'game e1' at the console and press enter.
						  - Select skill 0-3 by typing 'skill X' at the console.
						  - Type 'map e1' at the console.

Comments : Loosely inspired by negke's 'bbin1' project, I thought it would be fun to attempt
a similar thing with Quake's original episode 1. Beyond just chaining the maps
together, I wanted to combine them into something more than the sum of its parts,
with an interesting layout that provided lots of link-up between the different
levels and plenty of route choices.

If it's been a while since you played episode 1 and just fancy some nostalgia, the
end result can still be played in a loosely conventional way (albeit with a slight
sequence change depending on which e1m8 entrance you use). However for a novel
experience you are encouraged to try the new link-ups; you can play maps out of
sequence, enter them halfway through or even play a couple of them backwards. You can
pick keys up in one map and use them in another map (for a bonus challenge, see if you
can get to the final room still holding two keys...)

The codebase is basically Vanilla Quake, although some QC modifications were used,
a few out of necessity and some to improve the overall experience:
						  - Gravity triggers for entering/exiting e1m8.
						  - Multiple worldtype support (there are both keys and runekeys, both will still open
						    each other's doors).
						  - The e1m7 'gib shower' monsters no longer add to the monster count, to make it
						    easier for 100% plays.
						  - New lightning effect for the totally unnecessary mechanism at the end of e1m6.
						  - Teleporting monster flag (just because).
